Just as cancer starts in a few cells and spreads, alcoholism starts small and progresses to a fatal disease.

Doug Thorburn, reknowned author and addiction expert, reveals why so many attempts to conquer problem drinking are doomed to fail. Using numerous examples and case histories, Thorburn demonstrates how how subtle, innocuous behaviors are actually early indicators of addiction long before the addict has lost control.

The tools in this book are designed to enable family, friends and employers to spot the "early warning signs" of alcoholism and drug addiction, and to intervene at formulative stages to prevent, rather than react, to tragedy.

A note from the author...

My name is Doug. I'm not an alcoholic or other drug addict. I got lucky.

Others, through the fate of genes inherited, were not. This book is dedicated to those unlucky ones, the alcoholics and other drug addicts. It's also dedicated to their victims including their closest friends and lovers, who heretofore have never been given the tools required, either to diagnose the disease or assist in the healing process. The victims include not only immediate family, but also everyone with whom the addict comes into contact: co-workers, employers, employees, renters, landlords, others who are victims to violated contracts and against whom frivolous lawsuits are brought, not to mention motorists and law enforcers, both risking their lives. It's dedicated as well to healers, the caring and concerned doctors, therapists, nurses, psychiatrists, priests, ministers, rabbis, chaplains and others.
